6 Fellowships £10,000 Each at The Centre for Spatial Analysis and Policy (CSAP) in Leeds or the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) in London

We are pleased to announce the availability of six fellowships are available to support individuals in non-academic institutions to undertake defined research projects at the Centre for Spatial Analysis and Policy (CSAP) in Leeds or the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) in London. The Fellowships will provide individuals with an opportunity to learn and apply spatial analytical methods to their own data.
Value
Fellowships are valued at up to £10,000 each and will cover costs for up to 3 months for full-time projects and 6 months for part-time work (although other temporal arrangements may be considered).

To qualify to apply for a fellowship individuals should:
  • - Belong to a non-academic organisation
  • - Have a degree (preferably in geography)
  • - Have the support of their organisation
  • - Be located in the UK.

TALISMAN is a node of the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) and is funded through the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of a strategy to improve the standard of research methods across the UK social science community.  The key rationale for TALISMAN is to act as a catalyst for methodological innovation by forging strong links between research and capacity building in geospatial analysis and simulation. TALISMAN is based at the University of Leeds and the University College London.

ESRI CityEngine, Lumion, and SketchUp - The Ultimate City Toolkit?

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at ESRI's CityEngine and how it can be used to create rapid urban scenes. As we noted it moves GIS visualisation a step forward while at the same time bringing procedural city modelling into the mainstream game engine world. Of course the heart of the CityEngine is the ability to import real world data but to get to grips with the interface it is sometimes easier to look at creating urban scenes from simple procedural rules.


As part of the MRes in Advanced in Spatial Analysis and Visualisation, here in CASA we have been looking at various techniques to visualise urban data. One such technique is the creation of a 3D exhibition space, allowing agent based models and urban data to be visualised within an architectural space.

City in a Book: Augmenting the CityEngine

Over the past few days we have been working on a series of techniques to visualise and augment procedural cities.

Data Space: Agent Based Models, SketchUp, Visualisation, ArcGIS and Lumion

Over the past few weeks we have been exploring exploring new methods and techniques for visualising data. Developed as part our Masters course in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation we are now looking into issues of scale, realtime rendering, rapid visualisation and 3D exhibition spaces.




Regular readers will know we have been exploring Unity due its interactive nature and ability to import various file types into its game engine (see Particles, Agents and Emergent Behaviour ). Unity is still an option but for rapid visualisation Lumion also offers distinct possibilities. The movie below details our first draft example of building an exhibition space (SketchUp), retexturing and adding various crowd/delegate models (3DMax) and the Twitter map (ArcGIS) using Lumion:




If Lumion offered a stand alone viewer rather than purely movie based output then it would be our engine of choice. As such it is currently a weigh up between Lumion and Unity, our Unity example is under development, we will post it soon as we can...

Introducing QRator - iPad and Web Based Living Labels for Museums

QRator is a collaborative project between the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities (UCLDH), UCL Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA), and UCL Museums and Collections, to develop new kinds of content, co-curated by the public, museum curators, and academic researchers, to enhance museum interpretation, community engagement and establish new connections to museum exhibit content.
The interactive system is designed to be non intrusive while enabling members of the pubic to simply type in their thoughts and interpretation of museum objects and click ‘send’. Their interpretation become part of the objects history and ultimately the display itself via the interactive label system to allow the display of comments and information directly next to the artefacts.
The project is powered by Tales of Things technology which has developed a method for cataloguing physical objects online and capture memories and stories via the Internet of Things. QRator takes the technology a step further bringing the opportunity to move the discussion of objects direct to the museum label and onto a digital collaborative interpretation label, users’ mobile phones, and online allowing the creation of a sustainable, world-leading model for two-way public interaction in museum spaces.


At its heart QRator is an iPad/iPhone and web based system that allows everyone to be a curator and share their views on an exhibition. Visitors can examine an object before leaving their thoughts via an iPad to create a digital, ‘living’ label that subsequent visitors can read and respond to.




By downloading a free application to an iPhone or android phone, visitors are able to see rolling updates to the digital label after they leave the museum, or via twitter. Participants are also able to take part in the conversation online via the QRator site with comments appearing live within the museum.



Content currently covers two museums at UCL; The Grant Museum of Zoology and The Petrie Museum of Egyptology. he Grant Museum of Zoology is one of the oldest natural history collections in England, dating back to 1827. The collection comprises over 68,000 skeletal, taxidermy and wet specimens, covering the whole of the animal kingdom. Many of the species are now endangered or extinct including the Tasmanian tiger or thylacine, the quagga and the dodo. The Grant Museum is the only remaining university zoology museum in London.
The Museum will offer a continual programme of ‘Current Questions’ for visitors to engage in. UCL is taking the opportunity to rethink what a university museum can be; a place not simply for a passive experience but for conversation – a cultural laboratory for the meeting of minds. Positioning the Museum as a place of experimentation, dialogue and debate.

Two Posts Available at CASA: Lecturer in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation

This is an early 'heads up' on two posts at CASA to be advertised in the New Year. CASA, home of Digital Urban, is expanding and we are looking for two lecturers to teach on our MRes in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation course. In short, we are looking for highly skilled and motivated individuals with a good publication track record. If you fit the bill then applications will be open in early 2011, after all what better time to sort out the CV than over Christmas….

CASA is an international research centre developing state of the art computer technologies for applications relating to urban spatial systems. These currently embrace methods for spatial representation such as geographic information systems (GIS), computer aided design (CAD), and visualization using multimedia as well as methods for simulating urban form and structure which build on a spectrum of geospatial techniques from standard GIS through to spatial modelling, visualisation and crowd sourcing. CASA forms one of two specialist research centre’s in The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment.

We are looking for two outstanding lecturers to contribute to the forthcoming Masters of Research in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation (ASAV). The successful candidates must be highly skilled and very committed, with interdisciplinary and international experience as well as successful publications in peer-reviewed journals.

San Francisco Tweetography: Twitter Landscapes

Our geo-located twitter data mined from San Francisco has now been processed to create a new look at the city.

Processed by Fabian Neuhaus, a PhD student here at CASA, University College London, the new city twitter topography creates a unique new media landscape. The data is mined via our 'Tweet-O-Meter' system (soon to be seen in physical form in the British Library) which collects all geo-located tweets within a 30km radius of world cities.


You can view a full screen Google Maps style version of San Francisco over at Urban Tick as well as the previous maps of London, New York, Munich, Paris and Moscow.

From Buildings to Cities: Techniques for the Multi-Scale Analysis of Urban Form and Function

Duncan Smith here at CASA and Andrew Crooks, an assistant professor in the Department of Computational Social Science, at  George Mason University have just finished a new working paper entitled "From Buildings to Cities: Techniques for the Multi-Scale Analysis of Urban Form and Function."

Below is the abstract :

The built environment is a significant factor in many urban processes, yet direct measures of built form are seldom used in geographical studies. Representation and analysis of urban form and function could provide new insights and improve the evidence base for research.

So far progress has been slow due to limited data availability, computational demands, and a lack of methods to integrate built environment data with aggregate geographical analysis. Spatial data and computational improvements are overcoming some of these problems, but there remains a need for techniques to process and aggregate urban form data. Here we develop a Built Environment Model of urban function and dwelling type classifications for Greater London, based on detailed topographic and address-based data (sourced from Ordnance Survey MasterMap).

The multi-scale approach allows the Built Environment Model to be viewed at fine-scales for local planning contexts, and at city-wide scales for aggregate geographical analysis, allowing an improved understanding of urban processes. This flexibility is illustrated in the two examples, that of urban function and residential type analysis, where both local-scale urban clustering and city-wide trends in density and agglomeration are shown. While we demonstrate the multi-scale Built Environment Model to be a viable approach, a number of accuracy issues are identified, including the limitations of 2D data, inaccuracies in commercial function data and problems with temporal attribution. These limitations currently restrict the more advanced applications of the Built Environment Model.

London's Twitterscape: Metro Page 3

Well its been quite a 24 hours with the twitterography from CASA. Soho Mountain has become a new feature of the London landscape with the post on Londonist reaching the top 3 global retweets yesterday. A kind tweet by Stephen Fry helped a lot as did NotCot and todays Metro Newspaper has it on page 3.

Its good to see the research getting recognition in the wider media. These times of new data are revealing new aspects to our cities, we will have more on twitterography via ourselves, CASA and urbantick in the coming months.

MRes Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation: Curriculum, Aims and Admission

Below we provide full details for 2010 entry on the new MRes in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation (ASAV). The course reflects the current state of play in geographic, urban and architectural information systems with an emphasis on visualisation, analysis and modelling. Taught at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, home of digital urban, it is an innovative and exciting opputunity to study at UCL with a MRes acting as a pathway to a PhD or further career in ASAV.

Course Executive Summary

The Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) is an initiative within University College London to develop research in emerging computer technologies in several disciplines dealing with geography, space, location, and the built environment. As an interdisciplinary research centre expertise is drawn from archaeology, architecture, cartography, computer science, environmental science, geography, planning, remote sensing, geomatic engineering, and transport studies. The Centre is located within The Bartlett at UCL, from which it is administered but it has associated students and faculty in other faculties, specifically in Geography and in Civil (Geomatic) Engineering. This structure generates a unique blend of knowledge forming the core of the MRes ASAV.


The MRes is unique in its focus on complexity, modelling, mapping and visualisation, pulling together the latest research in urban form, functionality and communication. Recent changes in the rise of web-based technologies and the development of low cost yet complex visualisation and analysis packages has generated a notable change in the demand for more traditional vendor specific information systems and computer aided design courses.


The MRes ASAV reflects this change with a look towards Web 3.0 (Read, Write, Execute) technologies and methods to deliver skills required for current/future professionals and policy makers engaged in spatially related projects.


Curriculum Structure


The course has a strong research component based around developing new methodologies from new task specific software and techniques that have emerged as part of what may be termed the ‘Web Revolution’. CASA has been at the forefront of these changes that have impacted the way we share, communicate and distribute information, specifically information relating directly to geographic and spatial entities. These changes have steadily emerged since the mid 1990’s and it is now quite clear that location and space now represent a third force in information technology besides more traditional computer and communication science.

We reflect these changes within the interlinked laboratory-research-based mini project with data collection focused on ‘remote data mining’ rather than fieldwork in the traditional planning/geographical/architectural sense. Indeed these research led skills are increasingly becoming a key element in shaping our understanding of complex spatial functions.


Vast amounts of previously unused data are becoming available either from changes in accessibility, due to the nature of the network and cloud based computing, changing national data policies or more widely as a result of new mass data collection methodologies.


Course Aims

The programme aims to provide training in the principles and skills of social and spatial research. Its aims include a strong understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methodology and methods of data collection and analysis to support and enable independent and group research projects. In addition to focusing on research skills, subject specific modules provide students with the opportunity to develop an excellence in spatial analysis with the specific skill set to engage and contribute to the current debates in urban and spatial continuums.

Course Delivery

The course runs full-time over 12 months. The taught element of the course is delivered on two days per week over the first two terms.

Modules

BENVGSA1 - Group Mini Project: Digital Visualisation
The module introduces the students to methods of visualisation and data mining within the geospatial domain. Developed as a group project the module aims to provide an understanding of the juxtaposition between research, data capture and data display methodologies. As such the module is developed to build upon the taught sections of the course (BENVGSA3 and BENVGSA4) to develop initial research questions for the dissertation (BENVGSA2). Project assessment will be on a group basis.

BENVGSA2 - Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation MRes Dissertation
The module is based around the writing, preparation of an original research project in the form of a Masters Dissertation. Students will be required to plan the research and dissertation from an early stage with ongoing development building on both the mini-project and taught courses developed through the year. The research topic will be defined under the guidance of the students dissertation supervisor with the support of the Course Director. The aim is to produce a unique, individual piece of work with an emphasis on data collection, analysis and visualisation linked to policy and social science orientated applications.

BENVGSA3 - GI Systems and Science
The aim of this module is to equip students with an understanding of the principles underlying the conception, representation/measurement and analysis of spatial phenomena. As such, it presents an overview of the core organising concepts and techniques of Geographic Information Systems, and the software and analysis systems that are integral to their effective deployment in advanced spatial analysis.

BENVGSA4 - Spatial Modelling and Simulation
This course will introduce students to the theory, principles and applications of mathematical and computer modeling as applied to cities. It will be based on five interrelated themes: an introduction to definitions of models as they relate to the philosophy of science; the model-building process involving calibration and prediction; types of urban models ranging from land use transportation models, microsimulation, discrete choice, cellular automata and agent-based models; the exploration of two specific types of model, namely land use transportation; and then cellular automata ABM.

Tales of Things - April 2010

We are proud to announce that the 'Internet of Things' project we have been itching to blog about is set to launch mid April. The project is funded out of a digital economy sandpit with the technology developed by ourselves here at CASA, UCL and led by Edinburgh College of Arts, working with Brunel, Dundee and Salford Universities.


Termed 'Tales of Things' it is a possible game changer, cant say much more than that at the moment but if you want updates and to be first in when we launch, follow us on twitter - http://twitter.com/TalesofThings.

Just imagine every object holding a read/write memory and linking it to everything else. We will be talking about the project with a lecture entitled the 'Geography of Everything' at the free CASA Conference in London, April 13th. Riding high from a mention on the front page of Engadget, we at CASA at UCL are running a free one day conference on 13th April which will feature the work of our group on projects associated with our research funded by various UK research councils.

The conference is free but you have to register and space is limited.

GMapCreator: Clickable Thematic Maps Preview


Over at the GENeSIS blog Richard Milton of CASA has put up a sneak preview detailing some of the functionality of the latest GMapCreator. Traditionally clickable maps have been built using a server and database to translate the click on the client into a geographic area using point in polygon and then sending the query data back to the client. This method doesn’t scale when you have limited server resources and are looking to handle high numbers of hits, for example with the Mood Maps that we’ve been doing recently. An alternative solution is to build feature coded tiles and let the client handle most of the work displaying the data.

This build will be integrated into our MapTube site as soon as ready for wider use. As a side note MapTube is now includes the option to view your data on top of OpenStreet Map layers.

The Renaissance of Geographic Information: Neogeography, Gaming and Second Life: Working Paper 142


The world of Geographic Information (GI) Science has changed. It has experienced expeditious growth over the last few years leading to fundamental changes to the field. Web 2.0, specifically The Cloud, GeoWeb and Wikitecture are revolutionising the way in which we present, share and analyse geographic data.

In this paper we outline and provide working examples a suite of tools which are detailed below, aimed at developing new applications of GIS and related technologies. GeoVUE is one of seven nodes in the National Centre for e-Social Science whose mission it is to develop web-based technologies for the social and geographical sciences. The Node, based at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London has developed a suite of free software allowing quick and easy visualisation of geographic data in systems such as Google Maps, Google Earth, Crysis and Second Life.


These tools address two issues, firstly that spatial data is still inherently difficult to share and visualise for the non-GIS trained academic or professional and secondly that a geographic data social network has the potential to dramatically open up data sources for both the public and professional geographer.


With our applications of GMap Creator, and MapTube to name but two, we detail ways to intelligently visualise and share spatial data. This paper concludes with detailing usage and outreach as well as an insight into how such tools are already providing a significant impact to the outreach of geographic information.

Such tools open up a cornucopia of possibilities for the world of GI Science, especially for geovisualisation and it is high time to embrace the Neogeographer, the data and perhaps more importantly the services they are creating.
