San Francisco Tweetography: Twitter Landscapes

Our geo-located twitter data mined from San Francisco has now been processed to create a new look at the city.

Processed by Fabian Neuhaus, a PhD student here at CASA, University College London, the new city twitter topography creates a unique new media landscape. The data is mined via our 'Tweet-O-Meter' system (soon to be seen in physical form in the British Library) which collects all geo-located tweets within a 30km radius of world cities.

You can view a full screen Google Maps style version of San Francisco over at Urban Tick as well as the previous maps of London, New York, Munich, Paris and Moscow.

Due to various emails asking 'where is xxx' we have added four more cities to the Tweet-o-Meter which means more data to collect and analyse. Is it true that, New York is the city that never sleeps? Do Londoners send more Tweets than New Yorkians'? Is Oslo a bigger Tweeter than Munich? Is Tokyo into Tweets as much as Barcelona? Has San Francisco calmed down after that
Apple Event?


The Tweet-o-Meter measures the amount of tweets (measured in Tweets per Minute or TPM) received from various locations around the world. The gauges are updated every second giving you a live view of the TPM's in each location.

Tweet-o-Meter is designed to mine data for later analysis relating to furthering our understanding of social and temporal dynamics for e-Social Science within the Twitter demographic. The system is under development here at CASA as part of a wider survey tool as part of the NeISS project in association with Urban Tick and coded by Steven Gray.

Rincon Hill and Transbay Districts, San Francisco Visualization

The movie above by Steel Blue LLC details various renditions created at different times of project proposals in the Rincon Hill and Transbay Districts of San Francisco. It comes with a few words of warning:

'Segments of the video may show potential designs of developments that have been revised, put on hold or terminated. Massing location and heights of potential developments may not reflect future zoning revisions by City Planning. Refinement of our 3D San Francisco and future developments are in progress and we look forward to releasing future media. In the meantime specifics about individual project should be located on their respected official websites.'

That said, it is one of those movies to sit back and watch, it is really well done.

Twin Peaks San Francisco Interactive Panorama and Embedded Video

Above is a 360 x 180 degree panorama of Twin Peaks in San Francisco complete with an embedded video hanging between the two aerial masts. Click 'Load' the video with sound will appear shortly after the panorama, you can then click and drag in the normal way to pan around scene, zoom in and out using the either the mouse wheel or the Ctrl/Shift keys.

We recommend clicking 'Open' to view fullscreen to fully experience the video/panorama mix.
