London Cycle Hire Timelapse

Oliver O’Brien, a Research Associate here at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis has updated his excellent London Cycle Hire map to include a historic view of the last 48 hours.



As Ollie states over on his Suprageography blog, the distinctive weekday commuting patterns are easy to spot, with the morning rush into the centre, followed by the evening rush back out to the edges and the station terminals. Distribution vehicles movements can be inferred, particularly during the wee small hours when there is little other activity.

Simply Clouds and Shooting Planes: A London Sky Timelapse

For the timelapse below we mounted our Go Pro HD Hero on an outside window and pointed it towards the sky. On a late summer London day you can see the planes shoot across the sky, the clouds form and the sun set.

The movie consists of 10,863 images captured one every 5 seconds (it is best viewed in 720p, fullscreen):

The Go Pro HD was secured using a suction cup to an outside window and powered throughout using a simple iphone charger, the complete sequence filled a 16gb card over 12 hours. The timelapse was constructed using After Effects CS5.

London Timelapse: Fluffy Clouds and Full Moon

The timelapse above is the latest from the HD webcam housed on a roof in Camden Town - note the full moon rising above the cityscape towards the end of the clip. An image was grabbed every 5 seconds to create the movie.

Captured using a Quickcam 9000 mounted in a torch casing you can create your own using our simple to follow tutorial.

David Hubert wanted to make a video of London but I didn't have a camcorder, so he took pictures instead. In fact he took more then 3000 pictures and put them all together into a video lasting less then 2 minutes with excellent results:

A Summers Day in London: High Definition Timelapse

The movie above is entitled 'London in Summer' we have increased our capture rate to 1 frame every 5 seconds and self encoded the movie to .flv format while we wait for our Vimeo allowance to update.

Moving to 5 frames per second allows for a smoother timelapse although it notably increases processing time to create the movie. Things to watch out for are a rainbow after the clearance of one of the many showers and planes across the London skyline just after dusk.

High Definition Cloud Timelaspe: July 4th 2008

Our high definition cloud timelapse system installed on a roof overlooking the London skyline seems to be working well. Capturing at 1600x1200 pixels every 10 seconds we collect approximately 9000 images a day which are then processed at 30 frames per second to create a timelapse film in high definition.

The movie above represents our second test timelapse for July 4th 2008 - there are a few issues with the odd frame jump towards the start but these should be ironed out for future movies.
