The movie above was created back in 2006 as a test for using standard panoramic images as a way to create high definition movies. Now thanks to the video sharing service Vimeo it is possible to embed high quality output in our posts.

The movie features The Chapel of Peter and St Paul by Wren, Southwark Cathedral, The Painted Hall by Wren and St Giles in the Field. Any thoughts on the technique are as ever welcomed...

A Summers Day in London: High Definition Timelapse

The movie above is entitled 'London in Summer' we have increased our capture rate to 1 frame every 5 seconds and self encoded the movie to .flv format while we wait for our Vimeo allowance to update.

Moving to 5 frames per second allows for a smoother timelapse although it notably increases processing time to create the movie. Things to watch out for are a rainbow after the clearance of one of the many showers and planes across the London skyline just after dusk.

Worlds within Worlds for Architectural Visualisation

The second in our series exploring high definition (1280x720) panoramas expands the concept to explore 'worlds within worlds'. Embedding panoramas in a x/y/z space allows movies to be created where the camera automatically pans around a scene. Panoramas are traditionally interactive, thus all our output via this blog is available in Quicktime Virtual Reality. However, if you are going to display panoramas in a stand alone location, such as the front of an office or marketing suite, a movie is more suitable and thus the requirement to move panoramas into a 3D package.



If you expand this concept and embed panoramas within panoramas you can create 'worlds within worlds', as illustrated in the movie above. This allows a series of panoramas to be embedded within a 'holding' scene and presents a looping movie suitable for large displays.

High Definition (720p) Historic London Panorama Movie

Sometimes you sit back and think to yourself, wow this is makes it all worth while. Panoramas on their own can be impressive but when you render them in High Definition and link them to Mozart's Requiem Mass in D minor the movie raises the bar on what we thought possible.

As we noted previously our movies were rendered in DVD quality, or 720x480 resolution. Using a custom profile it is now possible to export via the simple to use (and more importantly rapid to export) Windows Movie Maker at 1280 x 720, or 720p High Definition.

You can download the movie here (80Mb, WMV), we recommend you have your headphones on or sound system operational as the sound track enhances the flythrough.
