Its been over five years now and with a series of new project such as TalesofThings, SurveyMapper and the Masters Course in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation the blog is looking like it might need a new home.
We have three choices at the moment, one is to move to a .com - digitalurban.com is sadly taken by a name holder who wants $600, so that's out. However, we do have the option to move to digital-urban.com. The second is to embrace the nature of digitalurban and make it a .org. The domain digitalurban.org was very kindly purchased and passed on to us by the nice people at the Redfish Group in Santa Fe. The final choice is to leave things as is and carry on regardless with .blogspot.com.
Any changes we make will not affect your bookmarks or links as Blogger allows a quick and easy way to change domains but keep the system. The only direct change will be all the 'retweets' will jump back to '0' as they are tied to the direct link.
As such we thought we would throw the question open to you, the readers. The survey will only take a couple of seconds to complete and it will also help us test out the 'world mapping' system over at SurveyMapper which is about to enter open Beta.
So .com/.org or leave it as is: http://www.surveymapper.com/response.aspx?id=30
Thanks a lot if you do take part, it all helps us shape the next stage of digital urban.
While i think the .org is better than the hyphenated second choice.. I don't believe there is a pressing need to move..
ReplyDeleteto be honest when i read this i had to actually spend a few seconds to look up and figure out what the domain name actually was
I think the old adage - don't just a book by its cover - fits well here, keep posting interesting stuff and people will follow and support, regardless of the route they take to get here..
agreed, it's about the content: not the name.
ReplyDeletei suggest you stay here unless you're facing certain limits on blogspot which can be taken away by moving to a .org domain.
.org is best. I'd promote that one. However, if it only costs you 10 bucks for the other to keep, link from there too and then dump it when ready.
ReplyDeleteI think you are fine here. I also had to look to see what the URL actually was.
ReplyDeleteWhen I worked in State Government (in NJ, US) a few years ago, this website was unfortunately blocked because in the eyes of IT, all blogs were not work related. Even though I worked as a physical planner/GIS person that used the news posted here for work use. Having a dedicated domain might help many of the users that are blocked behind organizational firewalls. And if you're going to pick a domain, go with the .org.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind if you decide to move as long as you keep creating good content I'll keep coming back.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest going with the .org option.
ReplyDeleteIf you decide to move to a new host you can create fairly sophisticated redirects with a .htaccess file so your retweet links won't break.
