As an update to our earlier post on Second Nature - Digital Urban, CASA and UCL in Second Life we have our first sample object available to view.
Firstly, as pictured above is a view of the geographic layout of the Central London section of the Underground Network. The map is finally complete and we will upload the high resolution image tomorrow.
Secondly is an 'Urban Bubble' of Chicago complete with viewing platform:
Although first steps there is at least now something to see...
If you have Second Life installed and would like to pop by to see what we are up to then you can visit our evolving cityscape by clicking on our SLURL... that's a Second Life Uniform Resource Locator or Second Life URL:

If you wish to contact us direct in the world or cant find our plot while its developing then simply add Smithee Bertrand to your contacts list and send us a instant message.
Other than noting that Second Life is more like Second Death these days, I do have a very important point to make.
ReplyDeleteThe gag reflex is very VERY violently invoked by the Second Life Dance. Please NEVER post any videos where the avatars are dancing.
Your entire professional reputation rests on this!
I agree - its a good point and one that i have come up against a lot. The look people give you when you say your using SL for research is sometimes harsh..
ReplyDeleteEven at a conference at Oxford last month the work was frowned upon so its a breath of fresh air to have Nature using it and offering us land.
A new movie is about to go online, and no dancing :)

Finally got to see them bubbles! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat work!
What size is the actual in-world tga texture on the spheres ? 1024 pixels or bigger?
Pompo - thanks for the comment, glad you popped by to see them :)
ReplyDeleteThe textures are 1024x1024 .jpg which is the largest size SL currently supports..

ReplyDeleteDid u try uploading a tga instead of a jpg? I was told SL converts all files including jpg to jpg2000 and to go ahead and just upload tgas which will give more details. You may wanna try it and see IF there is indeed a difference.
Now...if there was a way to have qtvr supported in SL! :)
Thanks for the tip..
ReplyDeleteOk going to try one as .tga now - it'll be the Tower Bridge Pano :)
