Sony’s CyberShot DSC-HX1 with 'Sweep Panorama' Technology

Many cameras now come with a built in panorama mode that allows you to automatically stitch images together. Sony’s CyberShot DSC-HX1 with 'Sweep Panorama' Technology takes this a step further by allowing you to simply 'Sweep' the camera across a scene for an automatically stitched image. The camera will stitch up to up to a maximum 224-degree view horizontal or 154-degree vertical with an end image coming in at 7152 x 1080 pixels.

The clip below details the camera in action:

While interesting we would place this one in the 'gimmick' category, stitching software has advanced considerably in recent years and now any digital camera or indeed camera phone is capable of creating hand held panoramas at a higher resolution.

That said, perhaps it would be nice to have for capturing high rise buildings or urban landscapes on the fly.

  1. This isn't gimmicky. Although it's not a feature everyone uses during all shooting sessions. It's something that really bridges a gap, when you want to get coverage of a scene. It's a mode of doing something that now realized, seems like it should have always been there. After seeing it, I would call it "the only way to fly". Stitching software may be good, but it's also an extra step and not available on many people's favorite image viewer, iphoto, picasa or others. Have you stitched with photoshop? HiRes photos start burning up the processor when you stitch 4 or 5 together. This does up to 99 frames!! Also with wireless cameras and cards, people skip editing all together or use the online editors these days. If you call this gimmicky, you should call image stabilization gimmicky then. Bravo Sony!

So doing this, you're going to be able to pan a crowd at a parade and get much better results I think because of the real time capturing and stitching. I'm actually pretty bummed you guys called it gimmicky. I think he didn't explain it well enough then, or the diorama demo somehow cheapened it for you. He should have panned the crowd at the convention instead.
